Advanced Air Mobility XR GUI

Introduction

The Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Airway Planner GUI is being upgraded to an XR (Extended Reality) application embedded in a 3D environment. The application features a 3D map, allowing users to define and modify waypoints more intuitively. This modern and immersive interface is designed to make route planning for advanced air mobility more accessible and engaging.

Note

This application now requires compatible XR hardware and software to fully experience the 3D environment and interactions, and it is currently under definition and PoC development.

XR Route Planner Interface

The AAM Route Planner XR GUI is a comprehensive and immersive tool designed to make route planning for advanced air mobility more accessible and engaging. By leveraging XR technology and a 3D environment, the application provides a responsive and interactive interface for creating, visualizing, analyzing, and sharing AAM routes.

The XR Route Planner interface is organized into several panels and sections, allowing users to interact with the 3D environment and input data easily. The primary components of the interface are:

  1. 3D Map: A central 3D map displays the terrain, waypoints, and route. Users can navigate the map, add, modify or delete waypoints directly in the 3D environment.
  2. Route Parameters Panel: A side panel containing input fields and controls for defining route parameters, airspace restrictions, weather conditions, aircraft specifications, and more.
  3. Route Analysis Panel: A collapsible panel that displays route metrics and performance indicators in real-time as users interact with the 3D environment.
  4. Export & Sharing Panel: A separate panel for exporting route data in various formats, integrating with aircraft navigation systems, and sharing route data with stakeholders.

3D Map

The 3D map is the central component of the application, allowing users to:

  • Pan, zoom, and rotate the map for optimal viewing angles
  • Add waypoints by clicking or tapping on the map
  • Modify waypoint positions by dragging them within the 3D environment
  • Delete waypoints by selecting them and using a dedicated delete button

Route Parameters Panel

The Route Parameters Panel includes form components for users to input the necessary information for route creation:

  • Origin and destination coordinates (latitude, longitude, and altitude)
  • Waypoints (manual entry or automatic generation)
  • Airspace restrictions (restricted airspace, temporary flight restrictions, and no-fly zones)
  • Weather conditions (wind speed and direction, visibility, temperature, and precipitation)
  • Aircraft specifications (type, model, payload capacity, max takeoff and landing weight, max range and endurance, and min/max airspeed)
  • Performance and efficiency parameters (optimal cruise altitude, climb and descent profiles, and fuel efficiency)
  • Traffic and conflict management (air traffic density and dynamic rerouting)
  • Regulatory and safety requirements (compliance with aviation regulations and emergency planning)

Route Analysis Panel

The Route Analysis Panel presents route metrics and performance indicators in real-time, helping users evaluate the efficiency and safety of the planned route. The metrics may include optimal cruise altitude, fuel efficiency, and conflict management.

Export & Sharing Panel

The Export & Sharing Panel provides options for users to export route data in various file formats, integrate with aircraft avionics and navigation systems, and share route data with other users and stakeholders.
